Moving day
How to switch to Cape Cellular
To switch to Cape Cellular you need a phone that takes an eSIM, like a recent Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, or an iPhone XR or 11 and newer. Sign up at cape.co with a referral code, set up the Cape app, then move your old number over in the app with your old carrier's account number and transfer PIN.
Before you start
- Check your phone. Cape's FAQ lists Google Pixel (GrapheneOS too), Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus and iPhone XR or 11 and newer, and Android phones need Android 13 or newer. Cape keeps the full list of phones on cape.co.
- Check your address on Cape's coverage map.
- Get your old carrier's account number and transfer PIN. Cape asks for both to move your number.
- In a contract? Read about the buyout below first.
- Get a referral code. It goes in when you sign up, and it's $20 off every month.
Step by step
- Get a referral code. Press "Deal me a code!" on cape.monster and copy it.
- Sign up at cape.co. Press Get Started and paste the code when Cape asks for a referral code.
- Set up the Cape app. Cape requires it: the app makes the private key that guards your number against SIM swaps, and Cape never sees that key.
- Start on your Cape number. Your new line works on its own number while your old one moves.
- Bring your old number. In the Cape app, go to Account, then My Numbers, then Bring a number to Cape. Enter the account number and transfer PIN, and Cape sends the request to your old carrier.
- Your number goes live. Cape says most numbers go live within minutes of the old carrier approving. It replaces your first Cape number; your referrals, billing and settings stay as they were.
Keep your old number as a second line
You don't have to move your number at all. Cape says most recent phones hold more than one eSIM, so you can keep your current line and add Cape on the same phone. Every Cape plan also comes with two extra numbers for texting, which Cape calls Secondary Numbers.
Which features work on which phone
| Feature | Works on |
|---|---|
| ID rotation (a new subscriber ID every 24 hours) | iPhone 11 and later, and Google Pixel, GrapheneOS included |
| Wi-Fi calling | iPhone, with ID rotation turned off |
| Last-Mile Encrypted Texting | Optional on iPhone. Cape recommends it: without it, group chats with Android users can split apart |
GrapheneOS
Cape supports Google Pixels running GrapheneOS. No phone that works? Buy a Pixel from Cape's shop and get 60% off your first year of Cape, up to $500. For $50 more, Cape installs GrapheneOS so it's ready out of the box.
If you're in a contract
Cape will help you leave it: 60% off your first 7 months of Cape, up to $300, to offset what your old carrier charges you to cancel. The discount starts once your number has moved to Cape, and VoIP numbers like Google Voice don't qualify. You opt in on Cape's buyout page.
Changed your mind?
Cancel within 3 days of your first purchase and Cape refunds you in full. The one catch: after that refund, you can't get the Proton deal.
