How it works
How the Cape speed test works
Run a real speed test on your phone over Cape's network, see your download, upload and ping, and compare them with other people's tests in your town. Only tests on Cape's network count toward a town's numbers: Wi-Fi tests your home internet, not Cape.
- Turn off Wi-Fi. Pause any VPN and iCloud Private Relay too: they hide which network you're on.
- Pick your town. Type it yourself. A phone's internet address often puts it miles from where it is, so cape.monster never guesses.
- Press Test my speed. GOBBLE downloads and uploads test files from Cloudflare's speed test servers for about 20 seconds. That uses up to about 56 MB of data on a fast connection, a few MB on a slow one.
- Keep your score. Your result stays on this phone in your speed history. If you tested on Cape's network, it also joins your town's board.
What counts toward a town
- Only Cape's network. cape.monster checks the internet address your test's result comes from against Cape's own addresses. Wi-Fi and other carriers show you your number but never go on a board.
- One person, one vote. A town's typical speed is the middle of each tester's own middle result, so someone testing all day counts once.
- A secret anti-cheat formula. It limits how many tests count from one browser, one connection and one town a day, and a town shows its numbers only once enough different people have tested there.
- The last year. Tests older than a year drop off, so a town's numbers follow Cape's network as it changes.
What network does Cape use?
Cape runs its own mobile core on other carriers' towers. Its FAQ says it has "multiple domestic nationwide and international roaming partners, including AT&T," and its blog says it partners with UScellular and the dozens of national and regional carriers UScellular works with. Cape's plan includes unlimited 5G and 4G data. Check your own streets on Cape's coverage map.
What a speed test can't tell you
- One test is one moment in one spot. Speed changes with the building, your phone, the time of day and how busy the towers are. Test inside and outside to see the difference.
- It's not Cape's test. These are visitors' tests on a fan-made site, measured against Cloudflare's speed test servers. A test with a different tool can read differently.
- Heavy months can slow down. Cape says that after 50GB of use it may temporarily slow data to 256 kbps.
What cape.monster keeps
Only tests on Cape's network are saved: the numbers, the town you picked, the day, the hour on your phone, what you said about where you were, and a scrambled form of a random tag this browser made for the site, so one person counts once. Never your exact spot or your name. For a day, a scrambled form of your connection keeps the daily limits, then it's deleted. Your own history stays on this phone. The test files come from Cloudflare's speed test servers, which see your connection like any website you visit.
Questions people ask
Is this Cape's official speed test?
No. cape.monster is a free, fan-made site, not affiliated with Cape. The test measures your connection against Cloudflare's speed test servers, and the town numbers come from visitors' tests on Cape's network.
Why do I have to turn off Wi-Fi?
On Wi-Fi your phone uses your home or cafe internet, not Cape. The test would measure that instead. Turn Wi-Fi off, and pause any VPN or iCloud Private Relay, so the test runs on Cape's network.
Why doesn't the speed test use my location?
A phone's internet address often puts it in the wrong town, sometimes another state, so a guessed location would put tests in the wrong place. You type your town, and cape.monster never asks for your location.
How much data does the Cape speed test use?
Up to about 56 MB on a fast connection. On a slower one it stops early and uses a few MB. A test takes about 20 seconds.
Why does it say I'm not on Cape's network?
Usually Wi-Fi is still on, or a VPN or iCloud Private Relay is sending your data somewhere else first. Turn those off and test again. You still see your number either way; it just doesn't go on a town's board.
Is Cape Cellular fast?
It depends where you are, like every carrier. Cape says it has nationwide coverage and fast 5G and 4G speeds. Run the test on Cape's network and see your town's typical speed from other Cape users' tests.
