Signal check
Cape Cellular coverage and network
Cape Cellular doesn't build towers. It runs its own mobile core on partner carriers' towers, AT&T among them, and says it can switch you between two major nationwide networks when you lose signal. Check your address on Cape's coverage map, then see what people on Cape really get, state by state, below.
What network does Cape use?
Cape is a carrier without towers of its own, like most of the small ones. Its FAQ says it has "multiple domestic nationwide and international roaming partners, including AT&T," and that it uses those partners' towers while all your traffic goes through Cape's own mobile core, the software at the center of a phone network that holds subscriber data and checks who is allowed on.
- Two networks, one phone. Cape's features page says you can choose your preferred network between two major carriers, and if you lose signal Cape switches you to the other. Your traffic spreads across both, which Cape says covers you more and makes you harder to track.
- UScellular's partners too. A 2024 Cape blog post says Cape would be the first consumer carrier of its kind to get UScellular's networks, made of dozens of national and regional carriers, and that the difference shows most in remote places, where signal tends to be spottier.
- A "heavy" carrier, not a reseller. Most small carriers run on a big carrier's core and resell its service. Cape runs its own SIMs and its own core, and says that's what lets it build its privacy and security in from the ground up: a new subscriber ID every 24 hours, call logs gone after 24.
Cape doesn't name its second major network on these pages, so neither do we.
Cape's coverage map
Cape's own map is at cape.co/coverage: type an address and it shows the signal Cape expects there. Check every address that matters, home, work and the drive between, not just your town. Traveling? Cape's roaming covers more than 50 countries, with 5GB a month of data routed home through Cape's US network instead of a foreign carrier's.
A coverage map shows where a signal should reach. It can't tell you how fast it is inside your building at 6 PM, which is what the tests below are for.
How fast is Cape, state by state
These are real speed tests that people ran on their phones with the Cape speed test. Only tests on Cape's network count, and the numbers update every hour.
From 33 tests by 18 people in 14 towns and 9 states on Cape's network, the last year, newest Oct 28, 2026. Typical means the middle: in a town, the middle of all its tests; for a state or all of Cape, the middle of its towns' own middles, so every town counts the same and one busy town can't drown out the rest.
| State | Typical download | Upload | Ping | Tests | Towns |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| California | 80.6 Mbps | 21.2 Mbps | 232 ms | 19 | 2 |
| Virginia | 111 Mbps | 8.4 Mbps | 116 ms | 3 | 3 |
| Hawaii | 89.2 Mbps | 29.2 Mbps | 216 ms | 2 | 1 |
| Maryland | 351 Mbps | 64 Mbps | 192 ms | 2 | 1 |
| Oregon | 49 Mbps | 23.3 Mbps | 244 ms | 2 | 2 |
| Wisconsin | 494 Mbps | 93 Mbps | 149 ms | 2 | 2 |
| Colorado | 105 Mbps | 8.9 Mbps | 176 ms | 1 | 1 |
| Illinois | 46.7 Mbps | 14.1 Mbps | 167 ms | 1 | 1 |
| New York | 498 Mbps | 65 Mbps | 139 ms | 1 | 1 |
Visitors' tests against cape.monster's own test server on Cloudflare's network, not Cape's numbers, and not a coverage map: a test only shows the speed where someone ran it. For fun and general information only, and they can be wrong (the fine print). Updated every hour.
Your state missing, or only one test deep? Turn off Wi-Fi and test your speed on Cape: your town joins the map from its first test.
What you get on Cape's network
- Unlimited 5G and 4G data, talk and text in one plan. Cape says it has nationwide coverage and fast 5G and 4G speeds.
- A soft edge on unlimited. After 50GB of data in a month Cape may slow data to 256 kbps for a while, and hotspot speed may slow after 30GB.
- Wi-Fi calling, for now on iPhone only, and only with ID rotation turned off. If your signal is weak indoors and you're on Android, that matters more than any map.
Coverage and privacy
Using other carriers' towers means those carriers see some data; Cape's privacy policy has a table of what. Cape's answer is to make that data messy: a new subscriber ID every day and your traffic spread across partners, so it's hard to tie back to you. In Cape's own words, there is no "silver bullet" for privacy on cell networks. The Cape Cellular review covers what Cape does and doesn't protect.
Check before you switch
- Look up your addresses on Cape's coverage map.
- See what people get near you on the Cape speed map, or your state in the table above.
- Try it for real. Most recent phones hold two eSIMs, so you can add Cape next to your current line and test it where you live. Cape refunds you in full if you cancel within 3 days of your first purchase.
- Sign up with a referral code: $50 a month instead of $70. Get a Cape Cellular referral code here, free, then switch to Cape.
